The Manhattan Post

I ♥ NY

I’m back in the city that never sleeps. Most people like to go to the beach to unwind. I go to New York City. I love the energy and diversity of this city. To start with, it’s a veritable melting pot and for the foodie, this is the place to go. Little Italy, Chinatown, Little Greece, the Carnegie deli, Magnolia Bakery even the falafel stand on the corner. There’s the cultural aspect of the city – notable museums like The Metropolitan Museum, The Museum of Natural History, Guggenheim, and the Museum of Modern Art. The iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and of late the 9/11 Memorial at the former site of the Twin Towers. There is shopping on 5th and Madison Avenues for the fashionista. There are dozens of shows on Broadway to suit every theatre aficionado. Then there are the bright lights of Times Square that makes it seem like daytime at 2 AM.

The quintessential cocktail attributed to New York is none other than the Manhattan. This was supposedly concocted at the Manhattan Club in 1894 at a party hosted by Manhattan socialite Jennie Jerome who later would become Lady Randolph Churchill, the mother of Sir Winston Churchill.

  • 3/4 oz dry vermouth                       vermouth. Stir well and strain in a cocktail glass. Garnish with a
  • lemon twist                                   lemon twist.

Perfect Manhattan

  • 2 1/2 oz blended whiskey               In a mixing glass half-filled with ice cubes, combine the whiskey,
  • 1/2 oz sweet vermouth                   vermouths and bitters. Stir well and strain in a cocktail glass. Stir
  • 1/2 oz dry vermouth                       well and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with either a lemon
  • 1 dash of bitters                            twist or cherry.

Despite the blistered feet from all the walking and the lack of sleep from a packed three day weekend, it was quite a lot of fun. Till the next time I go back to the Big Apple.
